Giants CB Prince Amukamara: ‘We’re going to have our hands full’ with Arizona Cardinals’ offense

The New York Giants went 7-9 last season and were dominated 35-14 by the Detroit Lions in their 2014 opener last Monday, and success doesn’t look to come any easier as they face an imposing Arizona Cardinals offense on Sunday.

Giants corner Prince Amukamara, who played his high school ball in Glendale, Arizona, sized up the Cardinals receiving corps Friday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM‘s Burns & Gambo show.

The Apollo High School product started by rejecting the notion that 31-year-old receiver Larry Fitzgerald — who was targeted only four times and caught just one pass for 22 yards in the Cardinals’ season-opening win — is no longer a threat.

“Regardless if Fitzgerald got looks or no looks, he’s still a threat on the field just because of what he’s put on film in the past,” Amukamara said, “and he still looks like a great, polished and flawless receiver.”

The Giants cornerback then addressed Michael Floyd, who looked like he’s becoming Carson Palmer’s No. 1 option after a five-reception, 119-yard performance against San Diego.

“Floyd is big and strong and fast, and he definitely is capable of making the big play,” Amukamara said.

The Nebraska University product product also mentioned a young, emerging wideout before assessing the Cardinals offense as a whole.

“And then No. 12, John Brown, man he’s been everywhere. It seems like the Cardinals like to get him the ball in different situations,” the cornerbacks said. “So the Cardinals (are) another offensive group with a lot of weapons, so we’re going to have our hands full.

Brown, a 2014 third-round draftee out of the small Pittsburg State, caught two passes for 29 yards and already has a touchdown to his name after one NFL game.

Not only did Palmer find 11 receivers for 304 yards in Week 1, but the Cardinals collectively broke the 100-yard plateau on the ground, meaning the Chargers couldn’t isolate Arizona’s running or passing game.

The Cardinals, who went 10-6 last season, appear to be going in a different direction than their Sunday host, and Amukamara spoke about how the 2011 champs are trying to turn it back around.

“I think the mood is that we looked at the tape; we’ve got to face it and look in the mirror,” he said on the Giant’s loss to Detroit. “And we just have to put it behind us and go out and win this game against Arizona. I mean it was Week 1, and we definitely don’t want to be on that road that we were on last year, because nothing goes (well) around here when you’re losing, especially in New York.

“So our main goal is just to go 1-0 every week, and this week presents another opportunity.”
