The Arizona Diamondbacks designated Peter O’Brien for assignment on Friday to make room for catcher Juan Graterol, whom they claimed from the Cincinnati Reds.
O’Brien, 26, appeared in 28 games for the Diamondbacks last season, hitting .141 with five home runs, nine RBI and 27 strikeouts in 64 at-bats.
Acquired by the Diamondbacks from the New York Yankees in a 2014 trade that saw Arizona part with Martin Prado, O’Brien was originally a catcher before transitioning to the outfield in 2014. In parts of five minor league seasons, he has batted .269 with 116 home runs and 386 RBI.
Graterol played in nine games with the Los Angeles Angels last season, going 4-for-14 with two doubles and three RBI. He hit .300 with two home runs, 10 doubles and 23 RBI in 68 games for Triple-A Salt Lake and was claimed by the Reds on Nov. 28.
