Shoe free agent Steph Curry sports Book 1s, Suns win thriller

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has been a shoe free agent for more than a month since announcing a split with Under Armour, and has been sporting different shoes with his newfound freedom.

He was rocking Chevrolet Book 1s in the home of Devin Booker during Suns-Warriors pregame on Thursday and kept the shoe brand on — albeit a more colorful version in the “What The” edition — throughout a 99-98 Suns win.

“I’ve been paying tribute, homage, and just showing love to all the different eras of the sneaker game the last couple of weeks,” Curry told reporters. “Just the idea of trying to infuse some energy into the sneaker world while I can, and the idea of me and Book and the relationship we’ve been able to build … there’s a bond there for sure. I was trying to beat him in his own shoes. Didn’t work.”

“What The” is a combination of all Book 1 colorways, hence the name alluding to a hard-to-describe court shoe.

The four-time NBA champion signed his pregame Book 1s and gifted them to Booker after the game. Booker had the pair propped up on the table while answering questions from reporters.

Booker said he is “100%” recruiting for a Nike-Curry partnership and that the unreleased Book 2s — which drop to the public on Jan. 2 — might find themselves on Curry’s feet before anyone else.

“I was planning on bringing some in a couple days (for Saturday’s matchup at Golden State),” Booker said. “He might be one of the first ones in ’em.”

The kicks didn’t reap too much personal reward for Curry, with 15 points on 3-of-13 shooting (2-of-9 from 3), nine rebounds and seven assists in 33 minutes.

After the Warriors (13-15) led by seven at the break while shooting 41% from the floor, the Suns (15-12) outscored them by eight in the second half for the one-point win. Jordan Goodwin knocked down 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 0.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Collin Gillespie fought through hard knee-to-knee contact with Jonathan Kuminga early into the final 12 minutes and finished with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Booker similarly to Curry struggled to find an early offensive rhythm, but toughed it out for a team-most 25 points on 9-of-19 shooting. He added two assists and two rebounds in 33 minutes.

The Phoenix star played in his second game since returning from a right groin strain, with this being his first start following a three-game absence.
