It’s been nearly two months since pound-for-pound kingpin Floyd Mayweather Jr (46-0) emerged victorious over Marcos Maidana (35-4) following their welterweight unification title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
In a bout that what will undoubtedly go down as one of Mayweather’s most memorable, the man known as ‘Money’ battled through 12 tough rounds against a very game Maidana to earn the judges’ decision. While the outcome was expected, Maidana’s surprisingly competitive performance led many to call for an immediate rematch.
Well it seems the fans will get their wish as the undefeated champion recently announced the date of his next bout during a red carpet interview at the BET Awards in Los Angeles.
“September 13, back to business, Marcos Maidana vs. Floyd Mayweather Part II. Then in May, I’ll have a big surprise for you.”
Here’s a video of announcement via LATen Media:
Maidana (35-4) took to Twitter to reveal he and his camp were still in talks with Mayweather’s team, but is confident both sides will come to an agreement.
REMATCH in the talks. Respect for @FloydMayweather man of his word, yet only fist talk in the ring. #LATINPOWER

It should be noted that no venue for this event has been named, but one would think both the MGM Grand Garden Arena and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn are the two favorites to host the highly anticipated rematch.
