Ever since the UFC announced its plans to hold UFC on FOX 13 in downtown Phoenix, the MMA community has been abuzz over which fighters should main event the December fight card.
While the promotion has yet to announce any fights, prominent Arizona based fighters such as Benson Henderson, Jamie Varner and Kelvin Gastelum and former Arizona State University wrestlers turned UFC superstars, such as Dan Henderson, Ryan Bader, John Moraga and C.B. Dollaway, would all make strong candidates to appear on the night’s main card.
While it’s all speculation at this point, UFC owner and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta recently hinted at major plans for the UFC’s first trip to the Grand Canyon State. “We’re playing around with it now. We have debated many, many times when we were coming to Phoenix. We knows it’s a great market and it just feels like this is the right time,” said Fertitta during an appearance on AZPreps365 on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. “It’s going to be a FOX fight. Live on FOX, free to air and we’re about a month out from knowing who’s going to fight. But I can tell we are going to deliver something big and I think we’re going to rock the city.”
Zuffa LLC, the company which owns the UFC, held WEC 53 at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale back in 2010. This event, which marked the final fight card in WEC history, was highlighted by current UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis’s famous ‘Showtime Kick’ against Glendale native Benson Henderson in the night’s main event.
UFC on FOX 13 is currently set to take place at the U.S. Airway Center in downtown Phoenix on December 13. The main card is scheduled to air on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
