The Arizona Coyotes welcomed goaltender Mike Smith back to Gila River Arena Monday night, honoring the former Coyote with a tribute video.
Smith was traded to the Calgary Flames on June 17 after spending six seasons in Arizona. He missed the Flames’ first trip to Glendale in February with a groin injury, but was in the net on Monday night.
The video showed some of Smith’s best moments from his time as a Coyote, including his buzzer-beating empty-net goal against the Detroit Red Wings in 2013.
As a Coyote, Smith made 8,763 saves, 568 of which came during the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2011-12 season.
His 9-7 postseason record that year played a major role in the Coyotes’ path to the Western Conference Finals, where they fell to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
This season with the Flames, Smith has compiled a 24-19 record with 1,452 saves.
