Arizona Coyotes fall in shootout to Flyers in first post-All-Star matchup: By the Numbers

The Arizona Coyotes came out of the All-Star break with a vengeance, but their early effort didn’t translate into a win.

They took on the Philadelphia Flyers on the road Tuesday and opened the game with two quick goals.

Philadelphia cut the lead in half just a few minutes later, and the Coyotes went into the first intermission with a one-goal lead.

In the back half of the second period, Philly put in two straight goals before Arizona’s Tobias Rieder knotted the score again.

Both clubs failed to score in the third period, and off to overtime they went.

The two defenses held firm in the extra five minutes, so a shootout ensued.

Right wing Wayne Simmonds connected on the Flyers’ third opportunity for the only goal of the shootout, and Philadelphia claimed a 4-3 win at Wells Fargo Center.

Philly boosted its record to 20-22-7, but is still fifth place in the Metropolitan division with 47 points. Arizona (16-25-6) gained a point for the overtime loss, but still has the second-worst mark in the Western Conference.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s close contest, by the numbers:

Andrew Campbell, a 26-year-old second-year defenseman, picked up the first point of his career on the Coyotes’ opening goal. Tuesday’s appearance was just his second with Arizona. He had a time on ice of 15:40 and was a plus-1 in the box score.

Defenseman Connor Murphy, 21, picked up his third goal of the season, which put the Coyotes on the scoreboard first. He now has four goals and 14 points overall in his two seasons at the pro level.

The Coyotes took a two-goal lead in the first five minutes and 50 seconds of the contest, as Murphy and left wing Martin Erat both got the puck into the net. The latter goal was Erat’s seventh of the season. Those five minutes and 50 seconds also marked the total time Flyers starting goaltender Ray Emery spent on the ice Tuesday; he was quickly replaced with Steve Mason, who only allowed one goal in 23 shots against him.

Rookie Tobias Rieder recorded Arizona’s final goal of the game. He responded just 23 seconds after Philadelphia notched its third goal of the contest. The second-period tally was the 22-year-old center’s second goal in his last three games, and his seventh of the season.

Don’t look now, but the Coyotes are on a season-worst seven-game winless streak, dating back to a 5-1 home loss to Ottawa on Jan. 10. The current skid has included two overtime losses and, apparently, not even the All-Star break turn around the team’s fortunes.

After recording an assist in the NHL All-Star Game, defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson did the same on Erat’s first-period goal. The 23-year-old standout now has 22 points on the season, which ties him with center Sam Gagner for the sixth-most on the Coyotes.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan notched two assists on the evening, making for his 26th and 27th point of the year — the fourth-highest total on the team.

Center Antoine Vermette picked up an assist on Rieder’s second-period goal and broke a tie with defenseman Keith Yandle for the team lead in points. The assist was Vermette’s 20th of the season, and his 31st point overall.

Even though the score was even at the end of regulation, the Flyers dominated in shots on goal 42-27. Smith had a solid night of 39 stops and a .929 save percentage, but the Coyotes weren’t able to secure a victory for him.
