The Phoenix Suns will vet a large group of prospects in the 2016 NBA Draft.

Many assume they won’t take a guard considering their logjam at point and shooting guard, but Suns general manager Ryan McDonough reassured Arizona Sports 98.7 FM listeners that his usual strategy of picking the best available player will stand.

The best guard on the board, by many accounts, is Providence point guard Kris Dunn. He’s right in the mix to be selected fourth overall, but there are complicating factors well before the Suns begin working out lottery prospects.

Sources told Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowksi that Dunn’s agents did not submit the point guard for medical testing at the NBA Draft Combine, which would have given every NBA team his medical history records.

“His agents are going to control that process,” Wojnarowski said on set. “They don’t want him to go to a team that has a young, established point guard. You look at Boston with Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart — Phoenix at No. 4 with Brandon Knight, Eric Bledsoe. Those teams are very likely, I’m told, not going to get Kris Dunn’s medical records.”

That’s especially a curious twist considering Dunn’s medical history.

Dunn, who just finished his senior season for Providence, required surgery before his freshman year to repair a torn labrum but also saw his sophomore year end in the nonconference schedule for a second shoulder surgery.

According to a Sports Illustrated story on Dunn, the second, which ended his sophomore season, “involved implanting screws into the shoulder and stitching in place muscles that had moved around.”

Either way, Wojnarowski reminds that the withholding of medical information can’t stop the Celtics or Suns from selecting Dunn.

“Will those teams do it without his medical records, without a personal workout, without and interview with them?” he asked. “I’m told Boston and Phoenix will likely have to do that with Dunn.”
