Arizona Diamondbacks unveil this year’s new food item, the Churro Dog

Last season, the Arizona Diamondbacks unleashed the D-bat Dog on an unsuspecting public, giving fans an opportunity to eat an 18-inch corndog that was stuffed with jalapenos and cheese, wrapped in bacon and served with a healthy heaping of fries.

This year, they will have another new food item at Chase Field, though it’s more on the sweet side of the aisle.

According to ESPN business insider Darren Rovell, the Churro Dog is “a warm cinnamon churro sitting inside a long john chocolate glazed donut, which is then topped with frozen yogurt, caramel and chocolate sauces.”

Rovell adds it comes with an estimated calorie count of 1,117.

“We’ve found that desserts work really well in the heat we have here,” D-backs president Derrick Hall said. So team chef Michael Snoke got together a focus group of eaters and tested out his Churro Dog idea and it was immediately loved.

Rovell, who joined Bickley and Marotta on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Wednesday, said the Churro Dog is the team’s effort to try and top last year’s successful new item, the D-bat Dog, and is another instance of teams realizing fans are apt to spend more money if their food is unique.

“Just like there is a perception on the word ‘value’ for tickets, value is not cheap, value is ‘what do I get for what I pay,'” he said. “Value means here, I’m willing to pay $25 for an 18-inch corndog stuffed with jalapeno cheese and bacon, why, because I can’t find it anywhere else and that will be part of my experience.'”

The Churro Dog will be available at two stands on the main concourse and will cost $8.50.
