Arizona Diamondbacks select Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson with number one overall pick

The Arizona Diamondbacks used the number one overall pick in the Major League Baseball first-year player draft on Vanderbilt shortstop Dansby Swanson.

The 21-year-old hit .348 with 14 home runs, 61 RBI and 15 stolen bases for the Commodores this season, and though this is his first season playing shortstop, the 2015 Golden Spikes Award finalist is expected to stay at the position.

Swanson’s college career got off to a rocky start after he suffered a broken bone in his foot and a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder as a freshman, limiting him to just 11 games. In 2014, as a sophomore, he was named All-SEC, and then was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player after hitting .323 with three doubles, four steals and five runs scored as Vanderbilt knocked off Virginia to win the national championship.

The D-backs are not the first team to draft the 6-foot-1, 190-pound Swanson. He was a 38th-round pick out of high school by the Colorado Rockies in 2012.
