Arizona Diamondbacks SP Robbie Ray hit in head by line drive, leaves game

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Robbie Ray was hit on the head by a line drive in St. Louis and left the game Friday.

Ray was struck by the ball in the bottom of the second inning. The ball bounced off Ray’s head and Daniel Descalso at third base caught the ball for the second out of the inning.

After staying down for a minute or two, Ray sat up and then a minute later made his way on a cart to a standing ovation from the crowd.

It was good news from D-backs manager Torey Lovullo following the conclusion of the game.

“Everything checked out in a very good way,” Lovullo said.

Ray had three sutures put in and will go through MLB’s concussion protocol, according to Lovullo. He returned to the stadium after his CT scan was normal and showered.

T.J. McFarland replaced Ray. McFarland, as it turns out, was hit by a one-hopper on one of the batters that he faced that inning.

The D-backs wound up losing by a score of 1-0. McFarland pitched well in 3.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.

The 25-year-old Ray is having the best season of his career. He entered Friday’s game with a record of 9-5 and a 3.15 ERA. Ray made the National League All-Star team this season along with Paul Goldschmidt, Zack Greinke and Jake Lamb.

Arizona has had to fill in for members of the starting rotation in 2017.

Shelby Miller made only four starts before being ruled out for the rest of the year to have Tommy John surgery, and Taijuan Walker missed time with a blister as well. Zack Godley has made 14 starts this season, taking over the fifth spot in the rotation in Miller’s place. Randall Delgado, Braden Shipley and Anthony Banda have also started games this season for the D-backs.
