Former Arizona Cardinals tight end Chris Gedney passed away at the age of 47, Syracuse University announced Friday.

Gedney played for the Cardinals from 1997-2000, appearing in 45 games and catching 55 passes for 607 yards and five touchdowns.

Before his time in Arizona, he was an All-American at Syracuse, playing for the Orange from 1989-93. The tight end led Syracuse to four consecutive postseason bowl games, including the Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Ariz. in 1992.

Gedney was drafted in the third-round by the Chicago Bears in 1993, playing in 28 games for Chicago over the course of four seasons. Battling injuries during his time with the Bears, he caught 28 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns.

After his NFL career ended in 2000, he served as a football analyst for the Cardinals and the Insight Bowl on XTRA Sports 910 Radio. He became a pregame and postgame host for broadcasts of Arizona home games before moving back to New York and becoming a color analyst for Syracuse football.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Chris Gedney,” Syracuse athletic director John Wildhack said in a statement. “Chris was a wonderful co-worker, a friend to all and deeply loyal to Syracuse University and our community.”

The cause of Gedney’s death was not released.
