Watch: D-backs’ David Peralta’s home run bounced off defender’s glove

It was reminiscent of Jose Canseco’s blunder in which a fly bounced off his head and went over the wall for a home run 25 years ago.

In the first inning of the Diamondbacks game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday, left fielder David Peralta hit a shot to left field.

Pirates left fielder Austin Meadows extended his glove at the warning track, reached for the ball at the wall, and felt the baseball hit the far right side of his glove.

The Pittsburgh rookie jogged away from the wall and looked into his glove, just to make sure he didn’t hang on to the ball.

It was empty. He slowed to a walk. Arizona took a two-run lead.

The D-backs have received quite a bit of help from the Pirates during the first inning of the final two games of the series.

On Tuesday, they scored six runs in the opening frame, in part thanks to a throwing error from Pirates first baseman Josh Bell. A potential double play – or, at worst, a fielder’s choice – bounced in front of second base and careened into the outfield.

This brought home the first run of the game.

Later, two errors on a pick-off attempt allowed two runners to score as center fielder Jarrod Dyson raced around the diamond from first base to come home.

With two more runs in the first on Wednesday, the D-backs scored eight runs in the first inning over the last two games.

They are looking to sweep the Pirates.

If Arizona can win behind Zack Greinke, it would mark their second consecutive sweep and their third in four series.
