PHOENIX — Center fielder A.J. Pollock will not be in the Diamondbacks’ lineup for the second day in a row as Arizona opens a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday.

D-backs manager Torey Lovullo made the decision to rest Pollock for another day after the outfielder’s fatigued legs responded well following a scheduled day off on Sunday.

“I talked to A.J. today and he felt like yesterday was a huge day for him and he made really good progress,” Lovullo said Monday before the series opener. “We just thought we’d continue again today. His legs were a little fatigued, he told me, and I made the decision.

“I just said, ‘Look, if you’re feeling better and progressing, I hit you really good with a day off yesterday, let’s get it right.'”

Pollock will be back in the lineup Tuesday, Lovullo said, and like he was Sunday, will be available to Arizona as a pinch-hitter Monday as Jon Jay starts in his place.

Pollock is slashing .283/.338/.483 since the All-Star break, and Lovullo credited him for being honest about his fatigue.

“When they give me good information like that, you’ve got to utilize it,” Lovullo said.

Marrero waits in the wings

Third baseman Deven Marrero was back in the D-backs clubhouse Monday as he prepares to make his return from a rehab stint in the minors due to an oblique injury.

Arizona had not yet discussed a corresponding roster move to add Marrero to the 25-man roster as of Monday afternoon, Lovullo said.

Marrero has been out since June 27 but made three AZ League appearances and four more with Triple-A Reno over the past two weeks. He recorded four hits, including a double, two walks and an RBI in 16 at-bats with Reno.

Lamb surgery scheduled

Third baseman Jake Lamb will undergo shoulder surgery on Aug. 15 after Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache diagnosed him with fraying in his rotator cuff last week. ElAttrache will perform the surgery.

Lovullo said the goal is for Lamb to recover by spring training.
