The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday they have hired their former senior vice president and general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. as a special advisor to current president and CEO Derrick Hall.

Garagiola Jr. leaves his post as senior VP of standards and on-field operations with Major League Baseball. He left the D-backs to join MLB as VP of baseball ops in 2005 and has served for the league office the past 13 years.

“Joe’s contributions to the D-backs and Major League Baseball over the years have been invaluable and we are very excited to welcome him back to the family,” said Hall in a statement. “While he will always be remembered as one of the architects of the 2001 World Championship team, his most recent roles at MLB make him a perfect fit to help our organization on the business side in a number of special projects.”

Arizona’s first GM from 1998-2005, Garagiola Jr. helped the franchise to division titles in 1999, 2001 and 2002.

He is the son of Joe Garagiola Sr., a former MLB player who spent 15 years leading D-backs broadcasts.

Garagiola Jr. has served as chairman of the Phoenix Metropolitan Sports Foundation and Arizona Baseball Commission.
