Former Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt got his first hit as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

After going 0-for-3 with three strikeouts on Opening Day, Goldschmidt bounced back by going 4-for-5 with three home runs and five RBIs in the Cardinals 9-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

America’s First Baseman recently signed a five-year $130 million contract extension with the Cardinals.

Last spring, discussions between the Diamondbacks and 31-year-old started at $200 million, per our own 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station‘s John Gambadoro.

After failing to reach an agreement on an extension, Arizona traded Goldschmidt in December to St. Louis for catcher Carson Kelly, right-handed pitcher Luke Weaver, infielder Andrew Young and a 2019 competitive balance round B draft pick.

The first of the three newcomers made his D-backs debut in Los Angeles Friday night — technically early Saturday morning — as Kelly’s two-out RBI double in the top of the 13th inning proved to be the game-winning run in Arizona’s 5-4 win over the Dodgers.

The 6:05 game was the longest regular-season game in the history of Dodger Stadium and the second-longest game in Diamondbacks history.
