Diamondbacks offense comes alive after losing Archie Bradley early: By the Numbers

...

It was a heck of a day for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Between hearing the somber news Tuesday morning that their former manager Kirk Gibson has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and watching in horror as their young starting pitcher Archie Bradley took a line drive to the face in the top of the second inning, the D-backs could’ve potentially mentally mailed this one in.

Instead, they played their tails off.

Arizona’s bats cracked like party poppers in a 12-5 win over the Colorado Rockies at Chase Field Tuesday night.

Outfielder Mark Trumbo led the way, going 4-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run triple (four RBI).

In fact, Trumbo was just a double away from becoming the sixth D-backs player in franchise history to hit for the cycle.

Paul Goldschmidt did his part for the offense as well, going 3-for-5 with three RBI.

He also helped Trumbo start the D-backs off with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Rockies would tie the game at three after Bradley exited the game, but the Diamondbacks then scored the next five runs — two of which came from a two-run homer from David Peralta in the fourth inning.

The D-backs avoided a five-game losing streak in the win and have tied the series 1-1. What were the numbers?

115

The comebacker that struck the 22-year-old Bradley flew off the bat of Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez at 115 miles per hour.

Bradley reportedly returned to Chase Field around the top of the ninth inning after getting tested at St. Joseph’s hospital in Scottsdale. He congratulated teammates on their win in the locker room postgame.

3 (part I)

This is the third time in Trumbo’s career that he’s been one hit shy of the cycle.

Twice before, he was just a triple away and Tuesday he just needed a double — which he almost got in the eighth inning, after rounding first hard on a bloop hit to right field. Trumbo appeared to change his mind and sprinted back to first, saying later he knew that was the “better team play.”

3 (part 2)

Trumbo now leads the National League in triples, with three thus far.

8

Owings went 1-for-5 and scored a run against Colorado, marking a career-high eight-straight games with a hit.

1

Yasmany Tomas sent in Trumbo with a double in the seventh inning, which marks his first extra-base hit and first RBI in the Majors, despite getting tagged out at third.

Tomas went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk.

451

Trumbo’s home run landed on the middle concourse of Chase Field, 451 feet away from home plate.

Notable scoreless innings were pitched by two D-backs relievers:

Oliver Perez retired the Rockies 1-2-3 in the seventh frame for his first clean inning since April 8.

Brad Ziegler retired the Rockies 1-2-3 in the eighth frame for his 10th-straight scoreless outing.

12

The Diamondbacks 12 runs were a season-high.
