Thursday was supposed to be Major League Baseball’s 2020 Opening Day. That, obviously, is no longer happening.

The coronavirus outbreak has caused most sports to halt completely. MLB’s season is delayed and spring training was canceled, and therefore, the originally-scheduled Thursday home opener for the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field is called off.

Filling the void of the Opening Day festivities, MLB has announced “Opening Day at Home,” and the D-backs are included.

Every team in baseball will have one game replayed on MLB.com, as well as MLB social channels like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube. The Diamondbacks’ replayed game will be Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, in which Luis Gonzalez collected a walk-off hit against Mariano Rivera.

That game will be available on MLB.com at 7 p.m., as well as on MLB Twitter.

Every team’s game, of course, is a replay of a win.

MLB already has made all 2018 and 2019 games available for free on MLB.TV, and other classic games are available on YouTube.

Fox Sports Arizona is also replaying the three previous Opening Day games throughout the day.

Spring training was already well underway when the outbreak of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, developed into a pandemic and prompted sports to be put on hold. Major League Baseball originally delayed the start of its season by two weeks, but soon amended that in accordance with a CDC guideline that said gatherings of 50 or more people be canceled or postponed.

With the season stopped, players continued working out at the D-backs’ spring home, Salt River Fields, on an optional basis. But Salt River Fields closed last week, and Arizona’s players are now conducting workouts and getting treatment informally at Chase Field.

There is currently no timetable of when the season will be played.
