Inside the Box: Gibson lights a fire in D-backs

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for April 12, 2011: Diamondbacks 13, Cardinals 8

The Good:

The Diamondbacks’ bats came alive battering Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter in the process. Carpenter, who historically has owned Arizona, was tagged for eight runs in four innings. Arizona whacked out 14 hits and clobbered three home runs in their overall demolition of Cardinals’ pitching.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks’ pitching continues to get lit up and only their offensive dominance saved them tonight. Armando Galarraga struggled giving up five runs in only five innings of work. Kam Mickolio relieved him and didn’t fare any better giving up three runs in 2/3 innings. Arizona has to start getting better pitching because their offense won’t be able to repeat performances like tonight very often.

The Funky:

Major props to manager Kirk Gibson for lighting a fire under his team. Gibson got tossed from the game in the third inning after two awful calls from the home plate umpire on check swings by Miguel Montero. Gibson got his money’s worth as he went toe-to-toe in a heated exchange with the umpire before leaving. The D-backs manager was sending a message to his team that they aren’t going to tolerate losing and are here to fight in the 2011 season for every game.
