ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

The Arizona Diamondbacks can be buyers but should they be?

Since their World Series victory almost a decade ago the Arizona Diamondbacks have been known as much for their financial constraints as their ability to win on the field.

Big spending, deferred payments and a lull in attendance handcuffed the franchise for years. With the team in the thick of National League West race people have wondered, will those constraints be lifted in pursuit of talent that could push the club over the top?

According to team president Derrick Hall, in an interview with FoxSports.com’s Jon Paul Morosi, they’ll be able to get what they need.

“We’ve got the flexibility,” Hall said in a Tuesday telephone interview. “Our ownership group is willing to invest in this team. We’ve told KT, ‘If we’re in it, we’ll do whatever it takes to support you.'”

Like the team’s play on the field, the strategy is vastly different than in recent years. Thanks to paying down a majority of their differed payments and being fiscally responsible in new deals, the D-backs are now in a position to be buyers rather than sellers.

Whether they should be buyers this year or accept that they’re ahead of schedule when it comes to their on field play is a decision Hall and the team’s front office will have to seriously consider over the coming weeks.
