D-backs’ Allen gets the call — finally

The Diamondbacks first basemen this year have, shall we say, struggled.
Juan Miranda, who has garnered most of the playing time, has posted a Chris Burke-like .213 average with seven home runs and 23 RBI.
So, really, it should not come as a surprise that the D-backs have recalled first baseman Brandon Allen from Triple-A Reno. He was, after all, hitting .306 with 18 home runs and a 1.006 OPS.
Allen, who has a career .221 average with five home runs and 20 RBI in 149 Major League at bats, is hardly the second coming of, well, any great first baseman you can think of.
What he is, though, is a 25-year-old who has proven all he really can at the minor league level. While he could be a classic “Four-A” player, he at least deserves a chance to show his stuff.
Besides, he can’t be much worse than anyone else the team has trotted out to first recently. And if all else fails, some guy named Paul Goldschmidt may be ready to take his place.
