Pitching staff key to Arizona Diamondbacks postseason run

The Arizona Diamondbacks need more pitchers.

Offense is important and can carry a team through a regular season, but pitching wins in October.

While the D-backs want to make a trade or two at the deadline, they will need to decide on both their short and long term goals.

“I would put relievers as more important than starters if we are talking about getting to the postseason, but if we are talking about winning the World Series, the Diamondbacks do not have the starting pitching,” Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug Franz said on Doug and Wolf. “If you want to go to the World Series, you’ve got to have the starting pitching.”

The significance of a strong pitching staff may be most visible in the postseason, but Arizona’s “postseason” may start a bit early.

The D-backs are just three games back of the San Francisco Giants and will likely be playing games with playoff implications, and a potential playoff atmosphere, throughout August and September.

Arizona’s roster may not be equipped to win the World Series as is, but ESPN’s Pedro Gomez mentions that all a team needs to do is catch fire.

“Just winning the division gets you the chance,” Gomez said. “You can get hot and you never know what can happen.”

The San Francisco Giants have arguably the best pitching staff in baseball and as the season continues the D-backs will need to acquire an arm, whether for the rotation or the bullpen, to stay in contention.
