Justin Upton, the Diamondbacks’ legitimate MVP candidate

Justin Upton is having a good season for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A .300 average, 23 home runs, 72 RBI, 75 runs scored and 17 stolen bases are certainly numbers worthy of an All-Star appearance, but an MVP award, too?

Upton hopes so.

“I want to play well, I want our team to win this division and make the playoffs,” Upton told Sports 620 KTAR’s Burns and Gambo Thursday. “I’m going to do everything in my power to put up numbers and make sure that our team wins.

“If we win this thing and I’m fortunate enough to get the votes I’ll be happy with it. It is definitely something I’d like to have on the trophy shelf.”

At this point you’d have to say Upton has as good a chance as anybody.

The only player in the National League who is having what is clearly a better season is the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp, but LA’s disastrous season may overshadow the center fielder’s .320 average, 26 home runs and 85 RBI.
