Inside the Box: D-backs can’t fight off sweep

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
August 21, 2011: Braves 1, Diamondbacks 0

The Good:

He may have gotten the loss, but Josh Collmenter did not deserve it. If he had any run support, he would have won easily. In his seven innings, Collmenter only gave up one earned run on four hits. That’s about as good as you can ask for a rookie starter who is trying to pull his team out of a losing streak.

The Bad:

The D-backs won’t win any games hitting the ball the way they are now. They managed five hits on Sunday, but couldn’t manage to get a single run out of those hits.

While we’ve all come to appreciate Gibbyball, his overly aggressive base running did the D-backs in on Sunday. In the sixth inning, Kelly Johnson tried to tag up from third on a pop-out to first base only to be tagged out at home. In the seventh, Miguel Montero tried to steal second after a Paul Goldschmidt strike out, but was caught after a terrible slide.

The Ugly:

When it was all said and done with this series, the D-backs’ were swept by the Braves, lost their fifth game in a row and only scored two runs in three games. Not a good trip to Atlanta.
