Inside the Box: D-backs continue to slide

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
September 17, 2011: Padres 3, Diamondbacks 1

The Good:

The Diamondbacks didn’t do much right on Saturday, but they didn’t do much wrong either. In their third consecutive loss, the D-backs only managed one run, despite five hits and five walks. It was nice to see Aaron Hill’s home run and starter Josh Collmenter only give up three earned runs.

The Bad:

The rest of the game was bad. The D-backs look like they are heading into a funk and that is a bad thing, especially at this time of the year when they are playing to lock-up a playoff spot. Collmenter gave up eight hits and big-swinging Justin Upton couldn’t get on base, except for a walk.

We don’t usually comment on the umpires, but Lyle Overbay got robbed in the bottom of the ninth. Two pitches that were way, way outside were credited as strikes for Padres pitcher Heath Bell.

The Ugly:

The D-backs have only scored three runs in their last 27 innings. That has to change.
