Arizona Diamondbacks fall to Dodgers in extra innings: By the Numbers

It could’ve gone the Diamondbacks’ way.
At the top of the 13th inning Sunday afternoon against Los Angeles, Dodgers pitcher J.P. Howell essentially fell backwards onto the outstretched leg of Jordan Pacheco as he slid into home, in an attempt to score the first run of the game.

Pacheco was called out, Arizona took the field, and less than five minutes later, Yasmani Grandal hit a bomb to center field to end the game, 1-0, in favor of the Dodgers.
Up until Pacheco’s big moment, borne of a bobbled pitch by — who else — catcher Grandal, not a single player from either side had even reached third base.
Chase Anderson pitched six scoreless innings and only ceded one hit, while his oppoenent, Brett Anderson, gave up five hits in six scoreless innings.
The Diamondbacks have now lost three straight, all against the Dodgers, in a series sweep by their rivals.
What were the numbers?

This is the third time this season Arizona has gone to extra innings.
Their last extra-innings-effort came against the Giants on the road on April 16, and, like Sunday, pitcher Josh Collmenter was scheduled to take the hill the very next day.
Arizona is now 2-1 in extras this season.

Zero was the number of the night, as both teams were scoreless through 12 frames and the top of the 13th.
In fact, Anderson ceded his first hit in the fourth inning, and would just give up one more.

The win was the Dodgers’ first in 13 or more innings since 2010, when they beat the Diamondbacks in 14 frames.

Reliever Evan Marshall entered the game in the 12th inning with a team-worst 7.45 ERA.
He kept the 12th scoreless, but gave up the Grandal homer on a 1-1 pitch.

Yasmany Tomas made a huge out in the ninth inning as LA’s Howie Kendrick attempted to stretch a double into a triple. Tomas was knocked over in the process, but held on.
