A closer look: D-backs lose in Drew’s season debut

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won,
but
we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened
in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look,
providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the
D-backs’ June 27 loss to Atlanta. Final score: Braves 6, Diamondbacks 4.

The Good:

The Diamondbacks bats came alive in the seventh inning,
with home runs by Chris Young and Ryan Roberts. The D-
backs had four of their nine hits in the seventh, and
scored all four of their runs in the inning.

Young’s home run was his first since returning from the
disabled list and snapped a 29-game homerless streak.

The momentum carried into the eighth, when Justin Upton
singled and Paul Goldschmidt walked to put the tying run
on base, before Miguel Montero grounded into a double play
to end the inning.

The Bad:

Trevor Cahill managed just five innings of work, giving up
six runs, four of them earned. The loss snaps Cahill’s
four-game winning streak which started June 3 against the
San Diego Padres. In his last two games, Cahill has given
up a total of ten earned runs in 14 innings of work.

He said it:

“The error cost us, and it turned into a bigger inning,”
manager Kirk Gibson told Fox Sports. “You try to minimize
those things, and unfortunately it came back to hurt us.”
Trevor Cahill was charged with a throwing error when
trying to make a play at second, which ignited the Braves’
three-run fifth inning.

Noted:

Stephen Drew started at shortstop for the Diamondbacks for
the first time in 11 months, after an ankle injury which
caused him to miss the last 137 regular season games. Drew
went 1-for-4 with a single in the fourth inning.

Coming up next:

The Diamondbacks face the Braves again Thursday, with
Trevor Bauer making his big league debut on the mound.
Bauer was called up after Joe Saunders was placed on the
DL because of a strained left elbow.
