Rumor: Cardinals teammates prefer Skelton to Kolb

Jul 25, 2012, 6:15 PM | Updated: 8:02 pm

If some Arizona Cardinals have their way, John Skelton
will be the team’s starting quarterback this year.

At least, that’s what NFL Network analyst Willie McGinist
says, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

According to the report, McGinist said his friends on the
Cardinals prefer the former fifth-round pick to the player
the team traded for last offseason.

“Talking to some of my buddies down there, it seems like
they’re gravitating toward Skelton a little bit more,”
McGinest said.

McGinest suggested that other players in the locker room
admire the way Skelton has worked his way up from being a
2010 fifth-round pick to having a chance to start, whereas
Kolb had a big contract and the starting job handed to him
last year.

This is little more than rumor and speculation, though
there is little doubt there are some in the locker room
who would prefer Skelton get the nod. However, there is
undoubtedly a contingent of players who would rather see
Kolb under center, too. That’s just the way it is.

“When you get second-hand information like that, I don’t
know how much stock you put into that,” Cardinals coach
Ken Whisenhunt said in response to the comments. “I have
no perception of that whatever, that that’s going on.

“I think from what I’ve seen, standing in the huddle —
which I don’t believe he was in the huddle — the team has
responded to both guys and feel like both guys can be
successful for them.”

Whisenhunt went on to say that if McGinist was willing to
say who his sources are or what context they were speaking
in the comments may carry more weight, but otherwise he’s
not concerned with it.

So anyway, what does it all mean? Not much, for now. The
competition will happen, and the winner will
be the team’s starting QB when the season opens on
September 9.
