D-backs pound Padres in offensive outburst: By the Numbers

They may not be the 1927 “Murderer’s Row” Yankees, but the Arizona Diamondbacks did continue their scorching play at the plate of late, demolishing the San Diego Padres 11-0 in the first game of their four-game series Thursday night at Chase Field.

With news of Archie Bradley making his return to the starting rotation come May 16, the D-backs were lively both on the field and in the dugout, as Bradley donned a catcher’s mask as a playful nod to the line drive to the face he took April 28 against the Colorado Rockies.

On the field, the D-backs’ lineup swung the bat with tremendous confidence once again, as for the second time in three games, the D-backs had three players notch at least three hits in one contest.

Mark Trumbo’s home run in the first inning Thursday marked back-to-back games that the right fielder produced power from the No. 2 spot in the D-backs’ lineup. Against Colorado Wednesday, Trumbo went 2-for-4 with one home run and three RBI.

To say catcher Tuffy Gosewisch had a day at the plate would be a gross understatement. Perhaps it was Thursday’s news that the D-backs added Jarrod Saltamlamacchia to the roster to provide depth at catcher. Whatever the case may be, Gosewisch played like a man possessed, smacking three RBI doubles in the 11-0 win. Entering the game, Gosewisch had only one previous game in the majors where he registered two doubles. Gosewisch’s three doubles versus the Padres were his first doubles of the season.

While we’re on the topic of doubles, the eight doubles registered by the D-backs Thursday tied a franchise record for most doubles in a single game.

It seems like first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has a record of some consequence against every National League opponent. The Padres are no exception, as “Goldie” has reached base safely in 19 straight games against Arizona’s neighbors to the west. Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 against San Diego Thursday night, driving in two runs, including one home run, his eighth of the season.

Rubby De La Rosa’s career era versus the Padres in three starts. The D-backs’ right-hander moved to 3-0 all-time against San Diego Thursday, pitching seven innings while striking out seven.
