A closer look: Mets’ Harvey dominates Diamondbacks in major league debut

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ July 26
loss to the Mets.
Final
score: Mets 3, Diamondbacks 1.

The Good:

Despite losing two straight, there are a few bright spots for the
Diamondbacks. They are 8-2 in their last 10 home games and catcher
Miguel Montero continues to find a way to get on base. He’s reached safely
in 11 of his last 15 plate appearances. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is
also trying to get back on track offensively. He snapped an 0-for-14
streak with a double in the eighth inning.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks missed another opportunity to gain some ground in the
standings. The D-backs lost to a struggling Mets team that came into town
on a six-game losing streak. The Dodgers lost to the Cardinals 7-4 on
Thursday and the Giants were idle. Arizona is now 6.5 game behind the
Giants and 3.5 games behind the Dodgers.

Also, Diamondbacks’ starter Wade Miley was tied for the lead in the NL with
seven wins at home but was handed the loss on Thursday.

He said it:

Manager Kirk Gibson when asked about Mets’ starter Matt Harvey.

“He’s got a good arm. Threw the ball good. He struck a lot of us out and we
got three hits off him and no runs so he’s pretty impressive.”

Noted:

To say Mets’ starter Matt Harvey’s major league debut was impressive
would be an understatement. Harvey is the first pitcher since 1900 to
strikeout at least 10 batters and collect two hits in his major league debut
(source: Elias Sports Bureau).

Up Next:

Game two of this four-game series vs the Mets continues on Friday at
Chase Field. Right-hander Josh Collmenter will try to put together another
solid start. Left-hander Jonathon Niese will go for the Mets. Collmenter is
2-0 with a 1.51 ERA in his last 15 games (four starts) after starting the
season 0-2 with a 9.82 ERA in four April starts. First pitch is set for
6:40pm.
