A closer look: Phillies end D-backs win streak

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but
we
all
know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a
baseball
game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you
with
the
analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 4
loss against the Phillies.
Final
score: Phillies 3, Diamondbacks 0.

The good:

Joe Saunders had a quality start once again Saturday,
pitching 6.1 innings giving up two earned runs on six
hits.

Saunders was pulled after giving up two singles with one
out, and Brad Zielger came on to record the double play to
end the inning.

The bad:

The Diamondbacks managed just four hits in the outing,
only the sixth game of the season in which they were
shutout. Justin Upton struck out looking to end the game,
with Stephen Drew on first base.

He said it:

Gibson addressed Saunders night on the mound, after the
team decided to pull him midway through the sixth.

“Unfortunate for Joe Saunders, we had to take him out,”
Kirk Gibson told Fox Sports after the game. “He pitched
very well for us. He gave us a real chance to win.”

Noted:

Gerrardo Parra reached first in the bottom of the eighth,
with two outs but was thrown out stealing while the tying
run was at the plate in Stephen Drew.

“He shouldn’t have been going, so it was his mistake. He
got the tying run up to the plate, he’s got to hold,”
Gibson said. “It was a mistake. He plays his tail off, but
it was a mistake that could have cost us the game.”

Coming up:

Trevor Cahill (9-9, 3.75 ERA) is set to face off against
Cliff Lee (2-6, 3.73) in the final game of the
Diamondbacks series with the Phillies. First pitch is
scheduled for 10:35 a.m.
