Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 26 loss to the Padres. Final score: Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4.

The Good:

The Diamondbacks had a few bright spots during this three-game sweep at the hands of the San Diego Padres at Chase Field. Pitcher David Hernandez had a strikeout in a career-high 16 straight games. Also from the bullpen, closer JJ Putz has recorded 22 straight scoreless appearances.

The Bad:

The Diamondbacks were swept at home by the Padres, losing on Sunday 5-4. The D-backs are now 2-5 on this 10-game homestand and 4-10 in their last 14 games at Chase Field. This is also the second time this season that the Dbacks were swept by the Padres in a three-game series.

The Ugly:

Manager Kirk Gibson on their chances of winning the division and making the postseason.

“We were talking today. In 1987 we were out 3 1/2 games with six games to go and we ended up winning the division. So crazier things have happened so we just keep pushing ahead. We have to play better. We have to have better pitching.”

He Said it:

Sunday was “Bark in the Park” at Chase Field. The total dog attendance was 312.

Coming Up Next:

The Diamondbacks start a three-game series with the Reds on Monday and rookie Tyler Skaggs will get this second major league start. The 21-year-old pitched well in his major league debut tossing 6 2/3 innings and allowing just two runs and three hits against the Miami Marlins. He will be opposed by Bronson Arroyo for Cincinnati. The Reds are currently in first place in the National League Central with a six-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals. Arroyo has won his last three starts with a 2.82 ERA.
