A closer look: D-backs fall to Dodgers in ninth to split series

Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ September 2 loss to the Dodgers. Final score: Dodgers 5, Diamondbacks 4.
The Good:
D-backs starter Wade Miley was in line for his 15th win of the season, after allowing three runs on nine hits in 6 2/3 innings.
John McDonald and Miguel Montero both homered, scored a run and drove in two for Arizona. McDonald hit a solo shot to in the third, which tied the game at 1-1. Montero jacked a two-run bomb with two outs in the fourth inning to put the D-backs up by the score of 3-1.
The Bad:
Closer J.J. Putz (1-5) failed to shut the door after surrendering a two-run double to Dodgers newcomer Adrian Gonzalez. The Dodgers walked off to beat the Diamondbacks 5-4 to split their four-game series.
He Said It:
”I got ahead of [Gonzalez] right there and tried to elevate to get him to chase it, but I just didn’t get it up enough,” J.J. Putz said. “The walk is the one that hurts. I was rushing to the plate, trying to be quick and try to keep Ellis from trying to swipe the bag.”
Noted:
Miley hasn’t surrendered more than two walks in a major league-best 24 consecutive starts.
Up Next:
The D-backs open a three-game set on the road against the Giants on Monday at 1:05 p.m. Southpaw Patrick Corbin (5-6, 3.93) will get the start for Arizona. He will be opposed by fellow left-hander Barry Zito (10-8, 4.42).
