Larry Fitzgerald wins NFL humanitarian award

Aug 13, 2012, 4:01 PM | Updated: 5:03 pm

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will need to clear off more space on his mantle.

Pro Football Weekly announced that Fitzgerald is the winner of the 14th annual Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian Award, which is presented annually to an NFL player whose contributions to the community and charitable organizations are especially outstanding.

Fitzgerald beat out Baltimore center Matt Birk, Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, Tampa Bay offensive lineman Davin Joseph and quarterback Matt Schaub of the Houston Texans for the award.

The Larry Fitzgerald Fund contributes time, money and resources to numerous organizations throughout the country.

Fitzgerald is also heavily involved in the Carol Fitzgerald Memorial Fund in honor of his late mother, who passed away from breast cancer in 2003.

Fitzgerald has also made several humanitarian trips to Africa, including one in early July to Uganda for a charity appearance with former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
