Collmenter, Prado help D-backs edge Wheeler, Mets: By The Numbers

Apparently, the third time really was a charm for the Arizona Diamondbacks against New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler.

Of the 23-year-old’s first eight wins in the major leagues, two have come against Arizona, including his only positive decision of the campaign back April 14.

But paced by a two-run second inning, the D-backs caused just enough damage against Wheeler — three earned runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work — Saturday afternoon to collect their third straight victory at Citi Field, 3-2.

Arizona starter Josh Collmenter pitched six solid innings, allowing just two earned runs in the process, and Kirk Gibson and Co. put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Here’s a look back at the one-run victory by the numbers:

Home is certainly where there heart is when it comes to Chris Owings’ bat. Following an 0-for-4 day at the dish Saturday, the D-backs shortstop is batting just .166 away from Chase Field.

.500:

With the win, Arizona moved back to .500 this season on the road. The D-backs, however, are a measly 6-18 at home this season.

For just the second time since joining the starting rotation, Collmenter recorded a quality start. Of his seven starts, the right-hander has allowed two runs or less just three times.

Saturday, he only gave up a pair.

Evan Marshall made his seventh consecutive scoreless appearance in the win. The rookie reliever walked two batters in his outing but was able to induce an inning-ending double play off the bat of Daniel Murphy.

7-of-10:

Martin Prado hit safely for the seventh time in his last 10 contests against New York. Prado recorded two run-scoring singles in the second and third innings for his sixth multi-RBI game of the campaign.

Hanging on in close games has actually been a strong suit for the D-backs through 50 games. Of their 19 wins, eight have come in one-run affairs.

David Wright’s solo shot in the fifth was the 10th long ball surrendered by Collmenter this season — tied with Wade Miley for the team lead. The Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates are the only other teams in baseball to have two starters who have allowed at least 10 home runs in 2014.

Sunday, the D-backs will play in the 15th doubleheader in franchise history. Arizona has participated in a double dip in each of it’s last four seasons.

Right-hander Zeke Spruill will make his first appearance of season and third start of his career in the second game of the single-admission twin billing.
