D-backs offense backs Collmenter in win over Pirates: By The Numbers

When Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Oliver Perez woke up on Thursday morning, he must have known there was a pretty decent chance that he’d be going to bed as a part of a different team. He won’t.

Perez is going to bed a Diamondbacks winner, as the pitcher of record in the team’s 7-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Chase Field.

Both starting pitcher Josh Collmenter and the offense struggled to get traction early and falling into a 2-0 hole.

But the Diamondbacks tied things up in the fourth inning, thanks in part to a fielding error on Scottsdale, Ariz. native Ike Davis at first base.

A fifth inning run then gave them the lead, but Collmenter’s hanging breaking ball to Neil Walker in the following frame opened the door for the Pirates to re-tie things.

The Diamondbacks bats, however, weren’t cooling off on a triple-digits night in Phoenix. They piled on four more runs over the course of the game, getting Perez a result and Addison Reed an extra run of insurance in the eighth.

Shortstop Nick Ahmed hit his first career home run Thursday, an eighth-inning solo shot which gave the Diamondbacks a three-run lead headed into the ninth.

Perez recorded his eighth consecutive scoreless appearance at Chase Field on Thursday, while also getting the win in his second straight outing. The last time the left-hander won consecutive games was six years ago, in August of 2008, when he was a starting pitcher.

Andy Marte’s pinch-hit home run in the sixth inning was the first such of his career and his first big league home run since Sept. 8, 2010. With the homer, Marte became the eighth Diamondbacks player to homer in his first at-bat with the team, joining Alex Cabrera, Bobby Estalella, Jose Cruz Jr., Felipe Lopez, Gerardo Parra, John Hester and Didi Gregorius.
