Diamondbacks place C Gabriel Moreno on IL, select Aramis Garcia

The Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday placed catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day injured list with a right hand contusion and selected the contract of 32-year-old catcher Aramis Garcia from Triple-A Reno.

Moreno’s IL placement is retroactive to Monday. Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Moreno will had back to Phoenix for further imaging.

The D-backs additionally transferred right-hander Christian Montes De Oca to the 60-day injured list with a stress fracture in his back and right elbow inflammation.

Moreno was scratched from Tuesday’s series opener in Toronto with a sore right hand, and he missed Wednesday’s game, as well. Jose Herrera has been filling in for Moreno, but with a day game after a night game, the D-backs opted for more catching depth.

Garcia’s contract was selected by the major league club for a game in June before he was designated for assignment. He ultimately rejoined Reno and this year is slashing .250/.399/.524 there.

He’s spent time with the San Francisco Giants (2018-19), Oakland Athletics (2021), Cincinnati Reds (2022) and Philadelphia Phillies (2024) before signing a minor-league deal with Arizona this season.

Arizona is calling on Garcia over prospect Adrian Del Castillo.

A shoulder injury cost Del Castillo the first two months of his season, as he finally went on a rehab assignment on May 20. He returned to Reno on June 10 and has only played five games since.

Del Castillo has gone 5-for-17 (.294) in those five games with two home runs, eight RBIs, six walks and six strikeouts.

The 25-year-old made his major league debut last season and made the most of his opportunity early. He hit a walk-off home run in his second career game and blasted a grand slam in his hometown of Miami a week later.
