D-backs move top prospect, Nogales native Demetrio Crisantes to Triple-A

PHOENIX — Infield prospect Demetrio Crisantes has been a hits machine when healthy throughout his professional career, and the Arizona Diamondbacks believe he is ready for the next challenge.

Arizona promoted one of its top-ranked prospects to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday after Crisantes hit for a .961 OPS in 35 games with Double-A Amarillo.

“Beyond the surface level stats, he continued to control the zone and make quality contact,” D-backs farm director Chris Slivka told Arizona Sports. “The quality of his at-bats and continued offensive consistency made us comfortable challenging him further.”

Baseball America has Crisantes first on its list of Diamondbacks prospects after Ryan Waldschmidt graduated. MLB Pipeline has Crisantes third, while ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel put him sixth with Waldschmidt still listed last week.

Crisantes missed time earlier this year with a hamstring injury, but he has been one of the most effective hitters in the Texas League since returning.

The infielder hit .319 and walked at an 11.9% clip, 3.5% higher than the major league average. His wRC+, which compares players with 100 being league average, was 130 when he received his promotion.

Crisantes is a career .320 hitter in the minor leagues since he was drafted in 2022 out of Nogales High School, finishing the 2024 campaign on a 57-game on-base streak. He hit for the cycle last month and won a Texas League Player of the Week award.

With the glove, he has stuck to second base this year but has previous experience at both corner infield spots.

“His defense has also been strong and much improved, a testament to the work he put into that piece of his game as he was getting healthy,” Slivka said.

Crisantes is a 6-foot, right-handed batter with a hit-over-power profile, although he hit 12 doubles, two triples and five home runs in his 35 games in Amarillo.

Health has been a question since he had Tommy John surgery in high school and missed most of last year with a shoulder injury, before his hamstring issue this season.

With Crisantes moving closer to the big leagues, position becomes another question considering Ketel Marte operates second base at Chase Field.

Crisantes started at second base and hit second for the Aces on Tuesday.

He singled to center on the first pitch he saw and scored on a Jose Fernandez sacrifice fly. He finished 1-for-5 in his debut.
