Diamondbacks prospect goes on award-winning home run spree

When the Arizona Diamondbacks promoted outfielder Avery Owusu-Asiedu to Double-A Amarillo, his numbers to that point were not much to write home about.

Since then, he has been the most fearsome hitter in the minor leagues, so much so that he won the Texas League Player of the Month despite getting moved up on Aug. 11. On Friday, the Diamondbacks named Owusu-Asiedu their Minor League Player of the Month, while giving Amarillo pitcher David Hagaman the Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

Owusu-Asiedu went on a four-game home run streak twice during his award-winning month, from Aug. 11-14 and Aug. 22-26. The last Double-A player to hit home runs in four straight games twice in a single season was current Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith.

The 6-foot-4 outfielder hit 11 home runs overall in 18 games with Amarillo, along with five doubles and two triples while batting .403 in 95 plate appearances. He went on a 14-game hitting streak to open his stay in Double-A.

The Texas League is hitter friendly, but this was another level.

Owusu-Asiedu is playing in his first season with the organization, as the D-backs acquired him from the Philadelphia Phillies for left-handed reliever Kyle Backhus.

He only hit .202 in High-A Hillsboro before the promotion and is not considered a top 30 Diamondbacks prospect by MLB Pipeline, but this surge may change that.

David Hagaman honored for dominant month

Hagaman, the third pitcher Arizona acquired in the Merrill Kelly trade last summer (Mitch Bratt and Kohl Drake), has been a strikeouts machine since getting brought up to Double-A.

In 25 innings through five starts at the level, Hagaman has struck out 38 hitters while working a 2.52 ERA. He struck out 10 hitters in his final start for High-A Hillsboro to begin August, and his 48 punch outs led Minor League Baseball for the month. He struck out 10 hitters in three separate starts.

Hagaman is widely considered the top pitching prospect in Arizona’s farm system by analysts with multiple nasty breaking balls.

Per MLB Pipeline:

Hagaman – who has multiple weapons with above-average potential in his fastball, curveball and slider – is up to a career high 96.1 innings on the season as a whole and could be an offseason Top 100 contender given the quality of stuff and results in ‘26.
