CBs Max Melton, Will Johnson exit Cardinals-Seahawks with injuries

Arizona Cardinals starting cornerbacks Max Melton and Will Johnson went to the locker room during Sunday’s action against the Seattle Seahawks.

Melton was ruled out after injuring his toe, the team announced. Johnson was said to be questionable to return with a neck injury, and ultimately did not as the Seahawks scored a touchdown to cap off a 31-7 victory minutes later.

Early in the third quarter, Melton stumbled while trying to defend Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a touchdown score that put Seattle up 14-7.

The losses are a huge blow for Arizona’s secondary, which struggled on Sunday. Smith-Njigba ended with nine receptions for 155 yards and three touchdowns.

Backup cornerback Kei’Trel Clark filled in for Melton.

Melton recorded three tackles, including a tackle for loss, prior to his exit. He recorded a tackle and two passes defended in the Cardinals’ Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Johnson recorded four tackles and a pass defended, but was part of a busted coverage on a play that saw Smith-Njigba score an 82-yard touchdown early in the game.
