Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro took the court Thursday night minutes before the Phoenix Suns tipped off against the Orlando Magic and just missed the ceremonial free throw.

Gambadoro said he wasn’t nervous ahead of the big shot, but he did get some practice shots in Thursday afternoon at Mortgage Matchup Center before his one shot on the court.

Gambadoro’s free-throw attempt was part of the Gila River Resorts and Casinos First Shot. Gila River Resorts and Casinos makes a $10,000 donation to the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation when the attempt is made.

“The thing is, I’m an Italian kid. I’m 5’10”. We don’t play basketball. Like we play baseball, football, hockey, boxing. We don’t play basketball,” Gambadoro said on Wednesday. “My goal is to hit the rim. I just don’t want to airball it. I think I’m a confident person … so if I was betting, I would bet that I’ll make it.”

While Gambadoro didn’t make it, he did achieve his goal of hitting the rim.
