Arizona Diamondbacks middle infielders Jean Segura and Nick Ahmed both left Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates after being struck by a pitch in the head.

Pirates reliever Arquimedes Caminero was pitching to Segura with two runners on and one out in the top of the seventh inning when Segura was hit by a pitch in the sixth pitch of the at-bat.

Segura laid face down immediately after the ball struck his helmet. After spending roughly a minute in the same position, Segura got up and walked off the field to the dugout with trainers.

In the next inning, D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed was also hit by a pitch in the head by Caminero. The Pirates reliever was ejected and Ahmed was also pulled from the game, although he lobbied to stay in.

Arizona manager Chip Hale was understandably frustrated after the game.

“You know what, when guys get hit in the head and they get hit in the face, there’s no place for that in the game,” Hale said. “And if the guy is not trying to do it, then he shouldn’t be here at this level. If you can’t have enough control to not hit people up there, it’s just not acceptable. Especially twice in one game.”

Caminero has had control problems this season, but when asked about whether he felt there was intent on either pitch, Hale was non-committal.

“Can’t get inside of the guy’s head,” he said. “Neither can an umpire, so that’s why [you] issue warnings and if you hit anybody you’ve got to go. It’s unfortunate, Jean’s at the hospital now getting a scan to see if he’s OK and Nick got hit right on the chin. So it’s not good. There’s no place for it in the game.”

Caminero left PNC Park without speaking to reporters.
