aces

Reno Aces (Triple-A Pacific Coast League)

Week: 5-2 | Overall: 24-25, 2nd place in Northern Division — 5.5 games behind Tacoma

Only long balls: Third baseman Carlos Rivero only had three hits in 17 at-bats, but they were all home runs. Rivero led off the fifth inning with a solo homer off of New Orleans starter Dylan Axelrod in a 7-5 win Thursday. He then clubbed a two-run blast in the seventh inning. Sunday, Rivero went deep again, hitting a two-run shot in the sixth of a 7-6, 11-inning win on the road at Round Rock. The 28-year-old Venezuelan native now has six home runs on the season.

Shipley update: Right-hander Braden Shipley had two more solid outings last week, although he did have a little trouble keeping the ball in the park in his second start. Last Monday, the 2013 first-round draft pick pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight. However, he settled for a no-decision in a 6-2 win over New Orleans. Saturday against Round Rock, Shipley allowed four runs and 10 hits over eight innings, but was victimized by the long ball — giving up three solo blasts — in a 4-3 loss. Shipley has had pinpoint control recently. In his last five starts, he has 28 strikeouts and one walk.

baybears

Mobile BayBears (Double-A Southern League)

Week: 3-4 | Overall: 22-28, tied for fourth place in South Division — 8.0 games behind Pensacola Another shutout: Matt Koch, Adam Miller, Daniel Gibson and Jimmie Sherfy combined on a five-hit blanking of Biloxi in a 1-0 win. The classic pitchers’ duel wasn’t decided until the ninth when Michael Perez jacked a solo home run off of Shuckers reliever Stephen Kohlscheen. It was the BayBears’ sixth shutout of the season, which is tied for the second-most in the Southern League.

Marzilli setting a tone: Outfielder Evan Marzilli had a nice week at the plate, hitting .455 (10-for-22) with a home run and five RBI. The 25-year-old also had a stretch of three straight multi-hit games — the first time he’s accomplished that this season.

rawhide

Visalia Rawhide (High-A California League)

Week: 5-3 | Overall: 32-19, 1st place in North Division — 1.5 games ahead of San Jose

Busy week: The Rawhide played eight games in seven days, taking two of three from second place San Jose and then splitting four with Rancho Cucamonga. Visalia closed out their series with San Jose with a 16-0 whitewashing of the Giants. They hit double-digits in the run column again on Saturday with a 10-1 win over Rancho Cucamonga. The Rawhide have scored ten or more runs in a game five times in May.

Lugo supplying power: Dawel Lugo, the D-backs’ 15th-best prospect according to MLB.com, had a big night in that 16-0 win over San Jose. Lugo went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI in the win. It was the first multi-homer game of Lugo’s minor league career. In fact, Lugo had only 17 home runs in 351 career games coming into 2016. His eight round-trippers this season are a career-high.

Jeter wins again: Reliever Bud Jeter notched another relief win Sunday against Rancho Cucamonga. It was his sixth of the season, which ties him for the California League lead with three other pitchers, including teammate Luis Ramirez. Jeter, a 24-year-old right-hander, is now 21-6 in his minor league career (123 games)

cougars

Kane County Cougars (Single-A Midwest League)

Week: 3-4 | Overall: 24-25, tied for 4th place in Western Division — 4.0 games behind Cedar Rapids Mitsui rolling along: First baseman Trevor Mitsui had five more RBI last week, bringing his season total to 35, which is tied for the Midwest League lead. The 2014 30th-round pick out of Washington drove in both runs in a 3-2 loss to Beloit Friday, marking his eighth multi-RBI game of 2016. Reed racking up the Ks: 19-year-old lefty Cody Reed is opening a lot of eyes around baseball. The D-backs’ number-13 prospect pitched twice last week, notching two wins, allowing just two runs in 14.1 innings and striking out 16 while walking none. Reed is fourth in the Midwest League with 55 strikeouts and has walked only three ALL SEASON.

Reed was also named to the MLBPipeline.com Team of the Week for his efforts.

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo writes:

While he might be known as “the other” Cody Reed, in deference to the more well-known prospect in the Reds organization, this Reed is quickly making a name for himself. He went seven innings or more in each of these two starts and he’s now third in the Midwest League in WHIP (0.88) and has a ridiculous 55/3 K/BB ratio in 39 2/3 IP.
