Diamondbacks ace Zack Greinke left his start Tuesday against the Phillies due to a left oblique injury, and after the 4-3 loss there remained no timetable or outlook for the starting pitcher’s return.

With the game tied 1-1, Greinke warmed up for the third frame but called the home plate umpire over and then the coaching staff. He said after the game he tried to heat the oblique up in the dugout before he threw three more pitches and ultimately decided to leave the mound to reliever Randall Delgado.

“I didn’t really feel anything until warming up that inning,” Greinke told media members after the game. “Even throwing at 50-70 percent, whatever it was, didn’t feel very good.”

The cause for Greinke’s tightness in his oblique was not immediately obvious, not even to Greinke. But the ace said he likely injured it with his at-bat in the bottom of the second frame.

He recorded a one-out, sac-fly RBI to left field that scored Jake Lamb from third base, tying the game.

“I think when he took the swing, that’s what bothered him,” D-backs manager Chip Hale said. “He may have felt it but he didn’t notice it until he got out there and felt the pitch.”

Hale said the team would reevaluate Greinke’s injury on Wednesday.

Greinke’s line for Tuesday night read two innings pitched, four hits and one earned run allowed with two strikeouts. He threw 35 pitches on the night, 26 of which were strikes.
