A.J. Pollock took another step toward his return from elbow surgery on Friday, taking in his first true game action with the Arizona Diamondbacks’ rookie league club in Tempe.

Arizona’s outfielder started the game with a groundball single to left field and finished the night 1-for-4 with no walks and no strikeouts. Pollock popped out to the first baseman with his second at-bat, flew out to left field with his third and popped out to the third baseman in his final at-bat.

In his first rehab start, Pollock played as the designated hitter against the Angels’ Arizona rookie ball club.

Earlier in the day, Pollock took in a cage session at Chase Field before the Diamondbacks played the Milwaukee Brewers.

D-backs manager Chip Hale told the media on Friday that Pollock could possibly return to the major league club before Sept 1.

Pollock entered his first game action following a two-inning hitting session in which he and rehabbing catcher Chris Herrmann (hamstring) took hacks at pitches from recovering Rubby De La Rosa (elbow).
