N’Keal Harry turns botched play into a 31-yard touchdown for ASU

Conservative, ASU offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey wasn’t.
Really, he was rifling through his playbook. On Thursday against the Utah Utes, the Sun Devils went to several Sparky formations often. They also delved into the trick plays with a 46-yard completion off a reverse and deep pass by receiver N’Keal Harry that was caught by Frederick Gammage.
Those went well.
Running back Kalen Ballage rushed for a touchdown out of the Sparky look, and Harry’s pass set up a touchdown that gave ASU a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. But a screen pass in the second quarter didn’t go as planned.
Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins hit Harry with a quick lateral pass, but the receiver fumbled the ball and picked it up looking to salvage … something.
By how he scooped the ball and looked to throw, Harry appeared to have a passing play set up. But as he swept left to right, there was nothing. Yet, he avoided three Utes in the backfield and cut back to the middle with the help of his Sun Devil offensive lineman before finding light. He got back to the line of scrimmage and broke outside for 31-yard touchdown run that was aided by a nasty Ballage block in the open field.
It doesn’t always go as planned, but that didn’t mean it was turning out badly for ASU in the first half as it trailed the No. 15 team 21-20.
