Hockey world rallies around Humboldt Broncos following tragedy

The hockey world came together Saturday night to honor those lost in a tragic accident Friday.

The Humboldt Broncos were heading to a playoff game against the Nipawin Hawks when their bus was hit by a semi-trailer, killing at least 15. Among those who perished were Broncos head coach Darcy Haugan, team captain Logan Schatz and radio announcer Tyler Bieber, according to The Associated Press.

The Arizona Coyotes, Chicago Blackhawks and Toronto Maple Leafs were just a few teams from the NHL who showed their support for the youth team.

Early Saturday morning, surviving members of the Broncos’ team were seen holding each other’s hands.

“I had a million bus trips in Junior. I don’t even know what to say,” Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said Saturday.

“I just feel horrible for the parents. Hockey is a family community, I don’t care if you’re Tier 2 or NHL, it’s kind of shocked the NHL a little bit, I know from talking to some of the players. It’s upsetting that something like that can happen.”

He wasn’t the only Coyote stung by the tragedy.

In addition to wearing “BRONCOS” on their nameplates, the Blackhawks will match a $25,000 donation from both the Winnipeg Jets and the NHL to the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Club.
