PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Corbin Carroll dropped his bat and looked to be in discomfort on a strikeout in the seventh inning on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, and he later left the game.

Carroll initially remained in the game to play defense, but when he was due to bat in the ninth inning, the D-backs called on Jorge Barrosa to pinch hit.

Manager Torey Lovullo revealed after the game that Carroll left with a hyperextended right elbow. Carroll is considered day-to-day.

“I’d done it on a couple swings before the break, but they didn’t linger,” Carroll said. “This one just lingered a little bit, but not concerned about it. Just maybe a day. We’ll see tomorrow.

“I just was having difficulty getting that arm back extended without it kind of tightening up on me, so just wasn’t able to go for today. I think tomorrow or the next day should be a good spot.”

Lovullo said Carroll did not undergo any imaging.

“A small part of me says he’ll be good enough to play in the game tomorrow, but we’re going to monitor him for the next 24 hours,” Lovullo said.

Carroll ended his afternoon 1-for-4 with two strikeouts and a double.

“I’d done it on a couple swings before the break, but they didn’t linger,” Carroll said.

In other words, he was 'hurting' before the All-Star break. Given his abysmal hitting for the past 50 ABs, it is probably better for Carroll to take a few days off. He was not helping the team and is not helping the team by playing with this specific injuriy.

That's encouraging. Might be smart to sit out a game or two and get it treated for the long haul, but knowing CC, he's going to lobby hard to play on Monday. He's a tough kid who has played through injuries earlier this year.

This is the downside of Carroll insisting on playing every day. If he is injured & the injury impacts his play, then he needs to step back. His hitting has been atrocious over the last 30 games at least. MLB shows him hitting .186 over that timeframe. The elbow doesn't sound like it was the problem that entire time, but it might have affected him over the past week or so.
