Kevin Ginkel’s season is over after the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday moved him from the 15-day injured list to 60-day IL with a sprained right shoulder.

The D-backs also optioned left-hander Kyle Nelson and selected the contract of 35-year-old Casey Kelly, a right-hander who made his major-league debut in 2012 for the San Diego Padres but from 2019-24 played in the KBO League.

Kelly returned to the United States in 2024 and made two appearances for the Cincinnati Reds last season before signing with Arizona on a minor-league deal.

He’s started 14 games and made 18 appearances in Triple-A Reno, where he posted a 5.82 ERA and 1.71 WHIP.

The moves give the Diamondbacks some length Wednesday against the Padres after Nelson failed to record an out and allowed a run with three walks in just 15 pitches (three strikes) on Tuesday.

That led off a game in which the Arizona bullpen followed starter Ryne Nelson’s 5.2 innings of two-run ball with six pitchers throwing 117 pitches and allowing seven earned runs and eight total in a 10-5 loss that ended after 11 innings.

Kevin Ginkel’s up and down season ends for the D-backs

Ginkel initially went on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right shoulder on Monday, a move that was retroactive to Sunday.

Now, his season ends with a 7.36 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in just 29 appearances, thanks to injury and a Triple-A option due to his struggles.

The down season came at an unfortunate time. Ginkel would have been in a position to give the team stability after losing backend relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez to season-ending injuries earlier in 2025.
