Nationals bring D-backs’ scoreless-innings pitched streak to end at 22

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ 22 scoreless-innings pitched streak came to an end in Friday night’s 7-3 loss to the Washington Nationals.

Coming into the game, D-backs pitchers had not allowed a run since the 7th inning of June 11’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

But after blanking the Phillies and Nationals in back-to-back games, Trea Turner was able to get Washington on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the third.

The 22 scoreless-inning streak compiled of eight D-backs pitchers: T.J. McFarland, Andrew Chafin, Archie Bradley, Merrill Kelly, Greg Holland, Zack Greinke, Yoshihisa Hirano and Robbie Ray, with Chafin and Bradley being the only ones to appear multiple times in that stretch.

Obviously the team’s collective ERA was an astounding 0.00 over the 22 scoreless innings, but the pitching staff also combined to only allow a grand total of 16 baserunners on 11 hits, four walks and one HBP, good enough for a 0.68 WHIP.

Arizona’s starters and bullpen also garnered 19 strikeouts (29% of the 66 total outs).

D-backs starters Kelly, Greinke and Ray accounted for 17 of those scoreless innings, six of which were no-hit innings by Greinke in Thursday night’s 5-0 win in Washington. The starting trio accumulated 11 of the 19 strikeouts and only allowed five hits, one walk and six baserunners.

Conversely, Arizona’s bullpen filled out the remaining four innings that included four strikeouts amongst the five bullpen arms. Bradley accounted for one hit and four strikeouts in three innings pitched while Holland struck out one in what was his 10th save on the 2019 campaign.

The feat comes on the backend of the 10-game road trip, but that should come as no surprise as the D-backs are now 23-18 on the road this season compared to their 14-16 home record. Arizona is 6-2 on the current road trip.
